DSTP information

* Beginning in March, students in grades 2-5 will be taking the Delaware State Testing Program (DSTP) assessments in Reading and Math. Students in grade 5 will also be taking the Writing assessment. These are very important tests for your child and the school. It is vital that students are in attendance on these days. Parents can help by having their child go to bed early the night before, eat a healthy breakfast each day, and get to school on time. March 11 and 12th are the days that Mathematics will be tested.  March 16th and 17th are the days Reading will be tested.  March 19th and 20th are the days our 5th grade students will be tested in Writing.   If you have any questions about the DSTP, please feel free to contact me at (302) 832-6330. A link with more information about the DSTP for parents is available at any time. http://www.doe.k12.de.us/aab/DSTP_gen_info/Frequently_Asked_Questions.shtml

This and That

Posted in Uncategorized on November 26, 2008 by

Dear Wilbur Families,

I apologize for not posting in a while.  Thank you for your warm welcome. This is a great school and I am very happy to be a part of it.  I can’t believe that December is upon us. We had a terrific turnout for our Parent Math and Literacy nights. We have other activities scheduled throughout the school year.  Some of them are our Wilbur Winner assembly on Dec. 5, our Winter concert on Dec. 8th (at Gunning Bedford 6:30 PM), and an entertainment assembly on Jan. 16th to name a few of them.  As a reminder, our last day of school prior to winter break is Friday, December 19.  School will resume on Monday, January 5th.  As always, thank you for all of your support!  It is very much appreciated.

School Bus News

Posted in Uncategorized on October 1, 2008 by

As I settle in to this wonderful school, I am finding that the majority of students referred to me for disciplinary reasons are being referred by the school bus drivers.  Once inside the school, the students are great and responsive to their teachers requests.

Riding the school bus is a privilege.  The safety of every child on the bus is our main concern.  Please remind your child(ren) of the following basic expectations:

- Remain seated on the bus at all times

- When talking, use quiet voices.

- Keep all objects and body parts away from the windows.  Absolutely nothing should be discarded out the window at any time.

- Keep hands, feet, and objects/materials to themselves at all times.

- Respect the authority of the bus driver at all times.

I have escorted students home on a particular bus and sent home a more specific letter encouraging positive behaviors.  Typically, students are given one warning and depending on the severity of the incident the student could be suspended from riding the school bus from one to five school days.  If  continued disregard for bus safety continues, the student may lose bus riding privileges for the remainder of the school year.

Again, parental support is appreciated as we strive to ensure a safe ride to and from school daily.

If you have any transportation concerns, the telephone number for the Transportation Department is 654-6673.

Hello Wilbur Elementary School!

My name is Steve Haber and I am the new Assistant Principal in the Blue/Orange Staff Center.  I come to Wilbur with much excitement and many experiences.  I began my education career as a special education teacher at Baltz Elementary School in the early 1990′s.  I came to Colonial in 1992 as a seventh grade teacher at George Read.  I moved to Gunning Bedford in 1995 and spent the next seven years as a seventh grade math teacher, Athletic Director, and multi-sport coach.  I became an Administrator in 2002 and made my first stop at Pleasantville Elemenatry School.  I spent the next five years at New Castle Middle School.  I spent one year at Wilmington Manor Elementary School and the beginning part of this school year back at Pleasantville Elementary.  All in all, this is my 18th year in education.  I am married with three children.  When not at school, I enjoy watching my children participate in the many activities they are involved in.  I also like to watch the Phillies and the Eagles in my free time.  Now that you know a little about me, I look forward to meeting and working with you.

A Little About Mr. Haber

Posted in General Information on July 21, 2008 by

I came to Pleasantville in mid -June of 2008 to start preparing for the 2008 – 2009 school year. Prior to being assigned to Pleasantville, I have served as a teacher at Baltz Elementary, George Read Middle, and Gunning Bedford Middle Schools. I was previously an Assistant Principal here at Pleasantville (seven years ago) as well as Principal of New Castle Middle School and Wilmington Manor Elementary School. This will be my 18th year in education.

Outside of school, I am married with three children (2 boys and a girl), who are 12, 10, and 6 years old. I enjoy spending time with my family, cheering for the Phillies and Eagles, and supporting my kids in their many activities.

Now that you know a bit more about me, I hope you will stop by and introduce yourself to me when school begins in August. I look forward to a positive and productive school year.

Welcome to Pleasantville

Posted in General Information, Uncategorized on July 3, 2008 by

TO ALL STUDENTS AND PARENTS/GUARDIANS:

Welcome to Pleasantville Elementary School. Our faculty and staff are committed to creating an atmosphere of academic and behavioral success. We believe that each student is unique and given the right direction can and will develop skills necessary to attain high levels of achievement, personally and academically.

We are fortunate to have dedicated teachers and staff members who work together to provide an excellent academic program for our students. We provide our students a solid foundation for further studies while encouraging each student to fulfill his or her potential. Providing a strong academic program has always been a vital part of Pleasantville Elementary School. We encourage students to first focus on their academics, then to participate in a variety of student activities that are available to them. Some of these activities are Math 24 club, band, and chorus.

Parental support is crucial to the success of our students; without this support, students do not have a solid foundation. We invite parents into the school for visitations, meetings, and/or activities. Volunteers are welcome to assist within classrooms and for various committee work through our very supportive PTA.

We hope that this is a rewarding school year and that your goals and objectives are met with success.
